In order to connect two personal computers to each other, you will need a crossover cable. If you don't have one, that's not a problem. If that is all you have I guess that is a good idea. But the RJ connectors are probably cheaper. And the only reason i can see cutting the middle out and doing what you did is if you didn't have anything. Then, I would have just twisted them together instead. But hey, there are many ways to do everything.
